Tirthraj means the king of pilgrimage sites. Once every 144 years pilgrims gather in India to celebrate the Maha Kumbh Mela, the largest spiritual and religious festival in the world. It is thought that a bath in the Ganges River at the confluence of Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers will purify one of all sins. Over 100 million people attended the Maha Kumbh Mela in 2013.

Award-winning documentary filmmaker Burt Chojnowski creates an intimate portrait of his 2013 journey through India including the Maha Kumbh Mela,  the sensual temples of Khajuraho, the Taj Mahal and Varanasi, the oldest and most venerated city in the world.  He is guided by Indian holy men, Vedic pandits, who represent the oldest spiritual tradition on the planet and shares interviews with westerners who were moved by the experience.

Chojnowski also meets up with Prudence Farrow Bruns, the subject of the Beatles' song, Dear Prudence, when the Beatles and Prudence were studying with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Rishikesh in 1968.

Whether it is a early morning dip in the Ganges at the Maha Kumbh Mela or Vedic pandits chanting on a boat ride in Varanasi in ancient Sanskrit, Chojnowski shares the experience with a backdrop of music from Indian composer and performer Manish Vyas.

Manish Vyas previously collaborated with Chojnowski on the award-winning documentary film Kora, that took travelers on a journey to the holiest mountain in the world, Mount Kailash, in Western Tibet.

Tirthraj takes its viewer on a journey to the some of the world's most sacred geography - places where heaven meets earth.

Tirthraj, the second in the Where Heaven Meets Earth series. The first film in the series was Kora which was an epic journey to the holiest mountain on earth, Mount Kailash on the roof top of the world in Tibet.
